Sounds like you've gotten plenty of good advice, but the one thing no one seems to have mentioned directly is the amount of force you are using.

Once you are down to less than 1/2 in thickness, you really should be letting the tool do all of the work. It took me a while to realize that I was pressing harder than I should because my tool had become dulled.

If you feel yourself pressing tool firmly -- in your wrist or fingers -- can usually feel heat build up on the tool near the cutting edge or in the shavings coming off the piece. While both of these are reasonable through some roughing stages, your touch should be much more delicate when you get below a 1/2-inch wall thickness.

If you find you have to press hard to find or follow the cut/edge, you need to stop and sharpen. With a truly sharp tool, there should be no physical effort involved, just subtle control/restraint. I've been doing this for a couple of years now, but I still forget/lose track sometimes.
