Gear shift knobs

A want to make a gear shift knob for a friend's car. I was thinking to use a set screw collar at the base to keep it attached and secure. Has anyone done this before? Any pointers? Thanks!

Every gear shift knob I've seen simply screws on. No set screw needed.

I've made a few of them. Most do screw on, so check the thread size and size your hole accordingly. If you have the right size tap, go ahead and tap the hole when you're all done. I just put a dab of silicone sealer in the hole and twist it on. Don't overdo it, it won't go anywhere. One I made for a newer 4 door jeep had a tab that held against a flat to hold the knob on. I was able to size the hole so it fit just a bit snugly and my cousin used some epoxy to hold it on.
