First ornament attempt

My children's Godparents collect Christmas ornaments so I thought I'd give one a spin (pun intended... sorry) using a piece of flamed box elder I got from Kevin (TexasTimbers).

Unfortunately, as I was working towards parting, the whole thing snapped off so here are a few pics with a request for suggestions. My wife came up with the idea of turning it upside down (broken section was supposed to be the bottom) and the "chopping" it down and putting a standard hook instead of drilling a hole. Either way, this is not going to be a present at this point, but I'd like to see how you folks with more experience might go about "fixing" this one.

The key things are the broken piece at the end and a couple of significant dings where it bounced off the tool rest/banjo as it came off.

What a bummer, that was looking great before it let go and went bouncing. My suggestion at this point would be to try and keep the main body and add a darker wood for a finial and the top where you would put the eyelet. It will take some doing to get it back on the lathe and centered but some creative thinking should get it there no problem.

I want to die quietly in my sleep like my grandfather, not screaming in terror like the passengers of his car.
