First Lathe Purchase

First of all, Hello everyone. I have been watching the forum for about a week now and thought I would join.

I have been bitten with the bug and want to move from straight cuts to lathing. After about 6 years of furniture and cabinet making, I took my first class last weekend with an introduction to pen turning. I have known for a while that it is something that I would like to do. I am taking Turning 101 this weekend. Maybe some more classes in the near future.

I am looking to purchase a lathe but am trying to balance not buying too much lathe and not outgrowing it to rapidly. I was originally looking at the Jet 1014 or 1220. But, for a couple hundred dollars more, I can purchase a much larger and more powerful lathe but it is from a company I haven't heard much from. Nova.

My local Woodcraft has this on sale and they mentioned it. It is the Nova 1624-44 for $899.99. Is this lathe worth the money?

I think this lathe has all the qualities I desire but want to make sure it is not of cheap quality.

Thanks for your input.

I was in the same place that you are in now a last year - most of the lathes that I looked into with quality names seemed to be fine.

The biggest thing I would suggest is a viarable speed - as I was turning today I thought that how much a pain it would be to change speeds from roughing to higher speeds to sanding and back and forth as you install different pieces - I like my dial
