Finish for Bowl

Ok, I have almost completed a bowl and was wondering what suggestions people would have for a finish on it. Its part Cherry and Purple Heart. I'm not entirely sure how to go about fnishing the bowl. Any help?

cole,
It all depends on the purpose of the bowl. If you are going to use it for food you want to use a food safe finish like Mahoney's Walnut Oil. You can get it from Woodcraft. If it is not going to be used for food laquer would probably be a good finish. I was told the best finish for Purple Heart is Laquer. That is all I have ever used unless it is a food safe project.

Honestly, I'm not really sure if it will be used for food because it will be a gift but I am planning on the side of safe and saying it will be used for food. What is the best way to apply Walnut Oil? Do I need to sand or buff in between coats of Walnut Oil?

No sanding or buffing required. Just rub it in and let it sit for awhile and add another coat. I usually put 2 or 3 coats, it just depends on how the project takes the oil. If you go into my photos there is a bowl under projects that I finished with Walnut oil. There are before and after pics, check it out, it only has one coat of oil right now. I will add another one when I get time. It is a first so that one belongs to the wife. She gets all my first projects like that. That is the first salad bowl I have done.

Ya, I would normally give the first to my wife but my in-laws got me the lathe for christmas so I thought I would make one for my Mother-in-law and give it to her for her birthday this month. The bowl, so far, has turned out decent. Not great but being my first one in a while not bad. I just finished sanding it down and am ready to apply some finish, thinking the walnut oil.

Since you are going food safe, you won't go wrong with the walnut oil. When you are finished with it you will have to post some pics so wew can see how it turned out. Letting the wife have all the firsts keeps her happy. When she is happy I get to buy new toys and the materials I need. Ya know the saying "When mama is happy everyone is happy." That is what I live by.
