Finial Blanks

Again I'm talking about cutting turning blanks from green logs. I have several outdoor fence posts (3-1/2"x3-1/2" Pressure Treated) that I want to make some finials for. They will be black locust and treated with an exterior stain. Not much grain shows through that, so grain direction is not important. I'm guessing I would cut the blank and then turn it as if it were a spindle. The length being with the grain of the log. The question is: would you keep the center of the log out of the blank or would it it be OK to include it. Most posts I've seen have the center of the log in them.

I would keep the center out of the log, the center is the pith and is the most common place for splittng.

Avoid the center of the log like the plague. Especially on a finial where it will be exposed and in the weather. It simply will not last. We've replaced piles of spindles and finials that were originally made with the pith included.
