Everyone's doing it (pens)

I have seen a lot of recent posting about pens and pen turning. So I thought I would share my latest turning.

It is a gold slimline pen with Bubinga and curly birch and a Bubinga center band. I sanded it to 2000 grit applied BLO and then applied a few coats of a CA finish and sanded it out to 12000 with micro Mesh pads. I like the CA finsh but will not do it very thick. Too thick and it is too much like plastic, and then what is the point of making it out of wood!

Let me know what you think... I'll put it up on my sight soon.

Looks awesome to me! Did you toss the gold center ring and make one out of the bubinga?

I've done about 20 pens already (only had a lathe for a week and a half). They were all from solid pieces. I've got some segmented blanks glued up atm, and am looking forward to getting unique pieces out of them.

DV,
Looks good. I like the different woods together. It's early in the morning here, what's BLO?

Well I didn't "toss" the gold band, I still have it... but I am using the Bubinga band in place of it yes.

Mike,

BLO= boiled linseed oil

Very nice. I'm fairly new to turning pens and those look really cool.
Maybe I'll post some of mine one day.

Looks real nice! I like that center band. What does the BLO do for the pen. Does it act as a hardener too or is it just bring out the color of the wood?

The BLO pops the grain of the wood and also helps speed up the CA cure time.
