Lots of people have done this. Dye's are fun. Personally I use water based Analine dyes. There are two very important tricks to dying. First is to make sure it's sanded as best you can. Dying will highlight any sanding marks that show. Second, do a test on scrap. Dyes don't look the same when you put them on. Especially before you finish them. Use the scrap piece, sand to the same grit dye and apply finish. Then you will know what the piece will look like. Otherwise it's a guess.
It's fun. don't be afraid to try it. Just try it on pieces your not real fond of at first so if you screw it up it won't such a loss. Flood the dye on and keep the edge wet. If you go back over an area you might see overlap marks. Otherwise it's pretty easy.
