Drill Press Lathe?

My father-in-law offered me a lathe that he was given and has no intention of using. It started me thinking and I would like to get into woodturning for small projects, mainly pens and game calls. My question is should I take up that much real estate in my shop for something I will only use for small projects or should I try something like this http://www.pennstateind.com/store/DPLATHE.html to use with the drill press I already have?

How fortunate you are to have been given a lathe.

I've been thinking a lot lately about investing in one myself but am a little intimidated because of my complete lack of knowledge on the subject and the expense involved in getting set up with what I'll need to get started.

Were you also given any tools with the lathe?

When I die, I want to go peacefully like my grandfather did in his
sleep. Not yelling and screaming like the passengers in his car.

No, I know the guy it came from. He takes real good care of everything. He wouldn't give anything away without it working at 110%. He is just giving away tools that he isn't using anymore.

Wood turning is one of those things it doesn't take a whole lot of skill to do but to do WELL........that's a different story. I had no experience and threw some wood on a lathe, made things that look pretty nice. Certainly, going from looking nice to being a true piece of art/superior craftsmanship is a long journey but the initial getting into it is not as bad as it would seem.
