copying items

Relatively new to woodturning. What I want to know is how to make copies of repeated works ie: spindle stuff or small vases etc.

I have an old Morten lathe with a nova chuck, the tailstock is not hollow and the base is two rails if this helps in any advise.

Well, you need a guide pin...and a cutter that follows the first piece. Of corse you know that!! The trick is how to build it! Start with a masive plate like 1/2" steel that can slide on the lathe bed...this will have a stationary pin and same size cutter...OK...this plate will need two knobs like a router. This plate should move front to back and side to side ONLY!! The pin follows the original and the cutter transfers the shape. The pin and cutter have to be dead solid! It can be done freehand...but takes practice. Two cranks would be sweet...one front and back...one for side travel. Make sure the cutter is about 1/8th" above center of piece being turned. If this does not make sence...you need to research the process. Hope this helps... Rick PS...both cutter and guide need to be in plain sight!

Never... I mean always... never mind Rick
