Coloring/dyeing wood

Anybody have any tips/techniques/materials preferences for dyeing/coloring turned pieces? I'd appreciate any help.

That bowl was perfect right up until that last cut...

People use everything from food coloring, clothing dyes, shoe dye, homemade concoctions, to special dyes designed to color wood. All wood turning vendors carry commercial quality dyes mixed with water or alcohol. Art supply stores normally carry dyes too.

Sometimes takes more than on application. Do not really want to sand much once applied. Dyes do not have much UV protection so fading is common. Have to apply clear finish over top once dye completely dry. Some folks add coloring to clear finishes, but that’s over my head.

Definitely, a learning curve no matter what dye you use.

I've been experimenting with Aniline Powder Dyes.
Some things I've learned so far is that it doesn't take much.
The stuff wants to get everywhere. I was dying the inside of a piece and didn't realize there was a small crack in it. The dye went through the crack all over the outside.
It is difficult if not impossible to remove.
wildwood is right, there is a learning curve. Start with pieces you don't really care if you lose.
