Question Chuck question

Does a chuck attach to the face plate or screw directly onto the headstock spindle? I have a 1" spindle and my lathe came with a faceplate but I'm confused on if I order a 1" x 8 tpi chuck or if it just needs to be able to be attached to my faceplate.

Is this what I want or am I missing something?

Sander,
The chucks screw right onto your headstock. If this is the chuck you are looking at:H6265 4 Jaw Wood Chuck 1" x 8 TPI

The other picture is of a different set of jaws that are made to screw onto this chuck in place of the jaws that are on it. Most chucks have different jaw assemblies available that fasten to the main body of the chuck. For a '4 jaw chuck' there will be 4 pieces that are each held on with two screws. Hope this helps,
Mike Hawkins

So the 1" indicates that my spindle thread needs to be one inch right?

To determine the spindle size measure the outside diameter of the threads. Then count the number of theads in a 1" space. Hopefully it is 1" x 8 but I have seen other sizes. It is important to know this information before ordering your chuck.
