Cherry tree down...turning material.

Had a smallish cherry tree go down in a storm - it's only about 12-13" dia. at its biggest. I'm thinking of just trying to get a couple thicker bookmatched boards out of the main trunk. But that still leaves some other portions unused.

I've never done any turning, so what's a usable size for turning stock in terms of diameter? And how should a log be handled? - just seal the ends, or cut it to specific lengths and seal those. I'm just trying to recoup a little for the time it'll take to do all this.

Thanks....

Seal all the ends on manageable pieces of wood that you can handle ,don't cut them into small pieces, then later you wish you didn't cut them so small. When your going to turn you can decide how long to make them, then seal ends on the ones you cut. Not near as much work this way at one time.If you don't want to seal them all yourself, send some to me and I will help you seal the best ones. Keep almost everything except the smallest branches, turnings from these on cherry usually crack anyhow. Mitch

Thanks Mitch, that kinda what I figured would be the best way. I don't have a lathe but my brother in law does, so he may be the recipient of them. I may give it a whirl too.
