Butternut day

Got a butternut log a few weeks ago and decided that today was the day to process the last 5 1/2 feet of it. (Did the other 3 foot section earlier in the week). I needed the room as I'm planning on picking up some walnut and black cherry before Christmas. I roughed the backs of 6 larger bowls between 17 and 14 inches wide. Cored them with my McNaughton Center saver as well. Waste not, want not...

Love the bowl saver especially on live edge work. It's so versatile. I can come in at almost any angle and cut out the core.

Butternut is quite soft. It's a cousin to walnut and the bark grows very similar. The wood is nice but wooly to cut. Very hard to get lately because of a disease that's affecting the bark and strangling the tree. The forestry ministry here won't allow any live trees to be cut. They're trying to see if any are naturally resistant.
