box elder box/bowl/flower holder

kind of like the idea of creating vessels with multiple purposes thought about doing a double or even a triple box but decided on something that could hold flowers and be a box. Started using sanding paper up to 2000 grit LOVE that smooth feeling but it sure does take longer to get everything just right! A few questions about finishing- the wet sand stuff 600+ Ive been dipping it in wax and applying. In terms of finish I'm totally clueless when it comes to this stuff. Don't know if that actually helps create a smoother finish or if Im just kind of smearing stuff around. What would be a good method for some kind of finish using wax or danish oil that can give a finish of the oil but have the smoothness of 2000 grit sand paper... know this sounds rather daft but Ive just been farting around thusfar and would love to know how the pros do it! Anyway with no further blather heres some yummy yummy box elder. By the by I have truck loads of this stuff all spalted and curly and flamed and have noticed there is some interest from people in getting some. If youd like any just pm me, would love to trade for something I havent turned before or would happily send some small stuff if tradings not in the cards! happy turning all,
Bond

Great bowl bond.
That's gotta be the prettiest junk wood out there. I love that fire.

When it's rustic......it's rustic

Nice job their Bond.
Beautiful box elder, especially with the spalting. Not sure on your finish you're using now. I normally stop sanding at 400, apply several coats of lacquer, then buff on the beale wheel system. Two buffing compounds then carnuba wax. Comes out slick as glass.

firehawkmph that is quite a process! how long does finishing take on your average bowl? Wish I had a buffing system but alas. When you put on the lacquer do you do it on the lathe? or by hand? and when you use the wax and buffing compound you put it on the bowl first and then buff with the wheel? not trying to sound dumb, just never buffed anything

Me either -- but I watched the video clip of J R Beall demonstrating the Beall buffing system, it made it much clearer. I think it's embedded on the Woodcraft.com page for the Beall system.
