Box Elder bowl

I turned this in the last week to give as a gift to a friend of mine who has been there to help me fell trees and cut up bowl blanks. He's also helped me remodel my kitchen, climbed in my attic to help put in new ceiling fans, helped clean my gutters, and basically been the extra set of hands anytime I needed them. I've made a bunch of bowls but realized he had never gotten any decent ones from me. I decided to right the wrong and made this for him. Box elder from a tree he helped me take down, about 5" x 2". Walls are kind of thick because I didn't want to screw up the bark inclusion. Has some nice quilted figuring where the blank was cut from a branch crotch.

Very nice looking bowl...was it turned green or dry? What did you use for a finish?

Thanks,

Paul

Paul, I turned it dry, it was cut back in May 2011 and drying in my basement until a week ago. I sanded it down to 400 grit then used some 0000 steel wool to clean it up and give it a little shine, then I just used wipe on polyurethane, about 4 coats inside and out for a nice smooth finish.

I want to die quietly in my sleep like my grandfather, not screaming in terror like the passengers of his car.

Nice job! I like box elder.
