black gum trays

These are the trays i've been doing for my sons church. They were made from the same piece of gum crotch. Just ripped it down the pith. They are 11x2 1/2, finish is 2 coats bulls eye shellac, 2 coats rattle can lacquer, waxed and buffed. The son liked them so that's good.

Steve,
Those are great. Never turned any gum, how did that turn for you? Soft, hard, any tearout, etc? Nice figure in there too.

Mike these turned great.Didn't have any tear out at all, and sanded nice also. I guess if i had to compaire them to some thing it would be soft maple. These were turned green then dna, then microwaved for a week off and on, at the defrost cycle, for 3 or 4 min at a time.Let them sit after that in brown paper bag for 2 weeks, and finished turned.Did have some warpage and some small stress cracks, but i left them thick, and was able to turn them out.
