That is a great first project idea. My MIL has a wooden one that looks very similar to yours, but it probably came from BB&B or Target.

Family and friends appreciate anything that is made by hand so much more than store bought...especially when the items look nice. My SIL has thanked us every time we have spoken since her birthday a week or so ago for the B-day gifts we made her...I made her a pen from flame boxelder; all denim except for one flame at the top of the pen. Mr. TT (her bro) made her a wine bottle stopper from Tambotie. You would have thought she won the Lottery when she opened her gifts. Part of her excitement was the shear surprise; she didn't even know that we had a lathe and could turn these items.

Isn't it satisfying to give a gift to someone that you've made yourself???...especially when the process is so much fun.

For a first project you done good. That's very good looking and it will get a lot of use. Makes for good gift items. Looks better than my first attempt.
