Is this Beech

The guy that gave me this log said that he thought it was Beech. Since I include the type of wood on a piece when I sign it, I'd rather not have to put "might be Beech". The color of the last photo is the closest to the actual color of the wood. The bark is relatively smooth with occasional ridges running through it horizontally. Any ideas"

Looks more like maple to me, especially the last pic. Can't see the little specks that are normally in beech. Just my 2 cents.

Thanks. After looking at the pics on phinds site, I wasn't prepared to say that it was Beech because of the elongated dots. I went out and looked at it closer and was able see them clearly on the bottom of a bowl I am working on where it was flat. I think it is Beech.

Speaking of smells I was turning a piece of hard Maple (green) and I swear I could smell ripe bananas. Am I losing it or is this possible?
