an anniversary bowl

There aren't any traditional gifts listed for a 16th wedding anniversary, but the modern lists tag it as "silver hollow-ware". One of my gifts was a log from the neighbour's wood-pile -- he'd taken down a silver birch after a storm last autumn.

Today I split it and cut out a couple of blanks from one half -- then proceeded to turn it hollow! Aside from making the tenon for the chuck (which I did with a parting tool), it was all done with a Penn State (Benjamin's Best) 1/2" bowl gouge.

Nice job.

That bowl was perfect right up until that last cut...

Nice bowl Duncan,
I always like spalted pieces. Now don't forget to autograph the bottom.

Thanks!

I hadn't thought about autographing my bowls - so far I've only made 3 and they aren't going anywhere they won't be recognized

For future reference ... do you use a pen? The birch seems very soft, something like a Sharpie would probably go blotchy.
