About the skew chisel

I've been practicing the planing cut but have trouble with the skew sliding across the tool rest. I was thinking of easing the square corners down the shaft of the tool but was wondering if there was a downside to this. Or is it maybe just my technique?

All the books I've read say to ease the corners of the skew for this very reason. I was lucky and started with an Oval skew which already has rounded edges. When I bought the Thompson skew it also has slightly rounded edges. I would take a file or lightly touch the edges to soften them. This makes is slide across the tool rest very smoothly.

Tim,
Also clean up your tool rest. I use a flapwheel disc in my right angle grinder occasionally to polish it up and get any nicks out.

Skew chisel

You will find that a lot of turners suggest doing exactly that. I see no side effects.
