Not even remotely. Butternut and walnut are related, but they are hardly the same thing.

Around here they call butternut white walnut. It is lighter in color. I have a table at the other house that is butternut. It was stained to look like walnut so that's what I thought I bought. When I stripped it I found out otherwise. I just put a finish back on and used it all these years.

Butternut is my second favorite wood to carve, basswood being first, Butternut carves like hard butter, I love it.
