Forstner bits are going to work a lot better in a drill press than router bits: they're designed to run at drill press speeds, while router bits aren't. If you use a router bit and try to move the wood to cut (like you would with a router), you may break your drill press.

I'd either go with a Forstner bit and a chisel (you don't NEED a corner chisel, but it will make your life easier. I wish I had one.) or a router, jig, and loose tenons.

These bits may work to cut in the vertical direction.

They may not work, in the horizontal direction.

Even in a router table, these bit are not designed to rout a deep channel in one pass. I use these to cut dado's or grooves, but I make many passes increasing the depth of cut by e.g., 1/8in each pass. I could get away with deeper passes, but the deeper passes will have more vibration which results in quality issues with the cut.

the bits I used for mortises on drill press

Hi Everyone

I wanted to followup on this thread with my final results.

I ended up making my mortises on the drill press in the wood class that I'm taking, using a bottom end milling bit as provided by the class instructor. He says it's normally used for sheet metal. Anyway, on the drill press, it did a pretty nice job and the bottom of the mortises are nice and flat.

No idea. It's a floorstanding press and I think it's set at the highest speed. (3100 RPM)
