Stonger Dowel Joint

Building a custom deck railing using 2x2 redwood balusters. It will be a unique pattern and I plan on using dowels for the joints. My question is what will make a stronger joint, a butt joint with dowel or 45 mitered with dowels. Dowel size is 3/8" and plan on using two dowels each joint.

Also which glue works better with redwood?

My vote is for the butt joint. Reason being that when you dowel miters the dowels have less wood supporting them/the pieces they're holding together, since the piece gets thinner near the edge of the miter. In a butt joint you'll have as much wood as you can possibly have supporting/surrounding the joint.

Miters might be prettier though and probably strong enough. I'm no expert though.

In addition to the 45 and two dowels I would drill and recess a 3" screw in the joint. Then insert a wood plug behind the screw to hide it.

Regardless of butt joint or 45 miter, use a single 5/8" dowel. If you are looking for strength, that one dowel is considerable stronger than two 3/8" dowels.
