Question about gluing planks to plywood for countertop.

I am planning on making myself some face grain walnut counter tops. I have some thick slabs, but not enough for all the tops. I was thinking about adding some plywood under some 5/4 slabs to bulk them up. Figure I might have to glue a piece on the front to hide the plywood. What would be the best way to attach the slab to the plywood? A experienced woodworker told me to just glue it, but with expansion it seems like that would split the counter at some point. I figure slotted holes like securing a table top or something might be a better approach. Any thoughts?

The problem with laminating plywood to one side it won't expand and contract the same as the solid wood and will cause the solid wood to bow. If you need to add wood I would apply it with only screws and elongate the holes to allow for wood movement.

Would probably help to get more detail/photos/drawings of what you are thinking.

5/4 is probably strong enough w/o the ply. Just thicken the exposed edge.

I'm inclined to agree with you guys. Just though I would run it by someone else. Thanks.
