New table top

I am currently working on a breakfast nook table for my wife. What is the best way to attach the 5 boards together? Woulda good jointed board and glue line work fine? Should I use a glue joint router bit? Dowels or biscuits?

My next question she wants a 3 inch skirt with mitered corners all the way around the top of the table top....what would be the best way to attach the long grain of the skirt to the end grain end of the table?

edge gluing boards is fairly successful with well jointed board edges and a quality glue (titebond II). the boards should be tight by holding them together by hand, don't rely on clamps to "bring" them together. glue is all that is needed.

A band will cause problems on the long grain/sort grain areas as you mention. I would place the band underneath the tops edge, with maybe a 1/8" setback, and with slotted fastening on the table top ends, so they don't split.
