Length-Long Mortises/Grooves

Hi All,

I'm in the process of building a platform bed and had a general question regarding mortises. I've had no issue making smaller mortises for the headboard and footboard using a drill press and a chisel. However, the upper rail on the headboard require mortises that span the entire length of the top and bottom (about 60"). Could this be achieved on my table saw? And if so, could someone please provide guidance? It would seem to be a rip through the middle while the board is standing but (and forgive me if this sounds dumb) would I have to remove the blade guard so it goes all the way through?

I call this a groove or slot.

Yes it can be done on the table saw. Just need to run the board on its edge.

Some featherboards or other means to keep the board upright and against the table are recommended.

You may need multiple passes if the desired width of the groove is wider than the saw blade kerf.

The answer to your question will only be as detailed and specific as the question is detailed and specific. Good questions also include a sketch or a photo that illustrates your issue. (:< D)
