Question Lapping - Sanding Machine?

Not certain which form might be best for this but thought I would try here first...

... I have a number of GL2 plywood parts that I would like to lap / sand flat in small batches.

Does such a machine exist? I will have many parts to lap, hand sanding / lapping is working for now but will not suffice in production.

If I were to build one what would it look like? Plans? Pictures?

I am familiar with metal lapping processes and looking for something similar to use to generate a precisely flat surface for my parts: 4X5 and 5X10 inches .25 to 1.5 inch thick.

Any ideas? Just looking for flat and smooth!

How about a drum sander? I don't know that you'd get machine-shop precision out of one, but if hand sanding works I imagine a drum sander could do at least that well.
