Iron ring for door handle?

I am making an old world/storybook type front door for my house. I took an adze to some aged rough-sawn oak. I have an idea that I'd like to be able to grasp an iron ring on the exterior and turn it to unlatch the door.
I have seen a ring handle for a gate latch, but the latch is on the same side as the ring. I would need the latch/bolt on the inside (I would prefer a rim lock on the inside, but I could do a mortise if necessary).
I can't say I've searched the Internet exhaustively, but it seems like most wrought iron rings to be found are just knocker or pull types (except for the gate latch/same side).
Has anyone ever seen this done? If there's no ready-made product, could a machinist bore the back of the ring base to receive the square spindle that turns a regular bolt, for a sane price?
Thanks!

The price would depend on the machinist, I would probably just bore a round hole in the back of the ring and turn the end of the spindle round to fit, then weld it in. If you had a hinged connection it could function as a knocker as well.

I have an iron ring latch on my side entrance gate. Should be available from hardware stores.

Are you going to have a separate deadbolt to lock the door?

If anything, just do something like this on the inside and then the outside can really be whatever you want it to be.

I've seen that and used one. Wrought iron ring, maybe 6" diameter, in the middle of the door.
Twist it to hear the bolt being drawn back.

I expect that a very good blacksmith knows how to make these as they did in the past.
Check with companies that build log homes in the $10,000,000+ range.
Pioneer looks great in the 6,000 sqft and up sizes.

Home Depot/Canada sells a huge range of hardware door & hingh stuff which is not in their catalogs.
3-ring binder hanging on the wall near where the regular hinges, etc are.
