Regarding the "shooting board", reply post 17 ...

I've never seen a shooting board for straightening the long edge of a board, only the shorter ends and miters....? I don't think it would be practical because of the length required.
Here's the old school method of using a hand plane:

Here is my favorite jig for straighten boards using a table saw. I've made it in several lengths. It also works to saw tapers on legs and cut very shallow angles:

This is not just some half baked approach, but actually works well and produces straight edges way faster than a jointer:


There is another method using a "follower", a straight section that rides along the fence with the workpiece:

wnt, how about a thread on the DC system over the TS blade on the 8/26/2011 photo? I get a lot of sawdust off the blade and that would fit the bill nicely.
