What do you mean you can't do fluting on a lathe, you just can't do it on a modern lathe. The two pictures I posted previously show the foot powered lathe in 1880 that the maker made to turn all sorts of things with various attachments. The second picture showed the use of a "curvilinear apparatus" in conjunction with the lathe posted. Lots more pictures showing other attachments and examples of what they do. Bear with me because I'm not sure the order these pictures were uploaded, but I'll try to describe photos.

1) book cover
2) side rest
3) eccentric cutters examples
4) vertical cutters examples
5) automatic stops (notice overhead pulleys)
6) universal cutter example
7) ellipse chuck examples
8) horizontal and universal cutter examples
9) dome or spherical chuck examples
10) spiral apparatus examples
11) the drilling instrument examples (notice the holes)
12) eccentric chuck examples
13) spiral apparatus and ellipse chuck examples
14) rectilinear chuck examples
