Fixing dowel hole

I drilled a hole out of place on a piece of mahogany for dowel joining a leg to the skirt of a table. The hole is 3/8" and is about 1/8" too low, so its not just a matter of drilling a new hole next to it. Can I fill the hole with pine dowel and drill again? Im scared the different types of wood will be problamatic when drilling half on the mahogany half on the pine.

if you had a tapered drill and hole cutter for 3/8 and a plug cutter and cut a plug out of mahogany and put it in their the plugs are tappered so it fits snug fuller makes one i use them for yrs now

You can glue a dowel in the hole and redrill it however it will be a much weaker joint than if done right. If the project is important I would recommend replacing the part.

It would be better to fill the first hole with a Mahogany dowel. I would not use a Pine dowel. Use an Oak dowel if you can't find Mahogany. If you use a good glue, it will be alright.
mhhickma likes this.

If you don't have time to do it right the first time, when will you have time to do it over?
