If you convert your current drawers, I think you will end up losing some size. Are you planning on redoing the drawers you already have? Or on making new drawers?

Also what type of tool do you need a jig for? A router? A band saw? a hand saw?

Studies have shown that having a ladder in the home is more dangerous than having a firearm. That's why I own 10 guns... in case some maniac tries to sneak a ladder into my house...

I recently went through buying a jig....made the mistake of trying the harbor freight one (same as another brand). After frustrating myself for 3 days I took it back and bought the porter cable jig....much much better.

The tools don't make the craftsman....

I used this set up in my first dovetail project http://www.ptreeusa.com/ptree_dovetail_system.htm and it came out pretty good.

Yes, you will lose width, You would need to make all new drawers otherwise they would be 1 inch narrower

Yup, either build new drawers or build new cabinets. Cutting dovetails removes materials from the sides of the drawers, thus making each side shorter.
