Attaching Table Apron Support

I'm building a dining table out of 6/4 oak. The top is approximately 72x42. I have a 3.5-inch wide apron running around the entire table, supporting the top and giving the table it's structure (also big, thick legs). I am planning on having one support that spans the center of the table, widthwise, perpendicular to the long apron sides, made of the same 3.5-inch wide oak.

Question is, how should I attach this support?

In a previous post, one poster suggested a sliding dovetail. Does this seems like a good idea? But, there was no guidance on how to do it... could I cut it completely on a table saw? Or... I do have a router, but haven't used it much yet, ha.

For my skill level, easier is better!
