I have several wood/leather stropping boards in my bag.
all with regular buffing rouge compound and they work quite well.
I used 1/2" plywood about 4" x 16" and glued the leather to it. (smooth side up).
you can purchase the smooth cowhide off of ebay and the buffing compound
from Harbor Freight and many on-line sources.
if you are a "purest", you can use Jeweler's Rouge instead of buffing compound.
mark the grit with magic marker on the leather and don't apply different grits
to the same boards - keep them all separate.
to keep the number of boards to a minimum, use each side with different grits.
