First carving, finishing screwup

Hi everyone,

I've been cobbling together techniques from professor google, but I'd appreciate some specific advice on this from anyone with a few spare minutes.

I've reached the finishing stage for the first carving I've attempted. It's a basswood relief carving. I just put the first coat of danish oil on, and some knife marks I made on the border earlier in the process (which i thought I had sanded enough) are now extremely visible.

What can I do at this point? Should i just wait until tomorrow when it's dry, sand that area down, and re apply the oil?

Thanks very much, photo attached

About all you can do is go a little deeper with the background. Use your knife and go around the detail and cut it deeper and use a #3 sweeps chisel to remove the offensive cuts. If you don't have one already it would be helpful if you had two 6mm to 7.5mm #3 sweeps chisels ground to an angle, one left and one right like a skew on lathe chisels. This will help you get into some tight places.

Very nice first piece. I have no experience with carving whatsoever but for a first piece, I would say that looks very pleasing to the eye :)
