Staining Epoxy: Follow up

A few weeks ago I asked about adding a bit of the stain I would use to finish the table to color the epoxy I was using to fill some cracks. There was some mixed opinions but I tried it anyway. I drilled a hole in some scrap to fill as a test to make sure it would harden correctly. I just dipped the stir stick in the stain before mixing the epoxy.

Test went great so on to filling the crack. This is the before shot of the crack.

I taped around the edges to limit any possible staining of the surrounding the areas. I also used hot glue to create a dam to let me over fill the gaps but limit over flow.

After it hardened but before it completely cured I used a plane to remove the overfill and even everything out. Looks good so far.

After completion and final finish.

Looks good to me!

I mix the epoxy and then add fine dust from whatever wood I'm using at the time, sometimes slightly darker dust depending on where it is on the piece and the look I want. For instance, I mostly work in Walnut so I take dust from my ROS filter and put it in a sealed bag to keep on hand but I also keep Ebony, Rosewood, Mahogany, etc. in case I need a different tone. The advantage to using wood dust is that there is no bleeding of color into the surrounding wood. Sometimes I use a drop of Mohawk Ultra Penetrating Stain, just depends...

Looks like yours is going to work just fine.
