Post Old used-up Retired Marine from NE Oklahoma

I am a 35 year career Marine who retired in 99. My name is Jim W. I go by okiebugg because I used to repair fishing reels (for several years) for a Company called Okiebug here in the Tulsa area.

I don't mean to be pretentious, but I have always had an inate interest in doing new things. I am a certified Master Cabinet Maker from back in the day. I am at present a Paramedic working in the ER at an Inner City Hospital. (Very exciting)

I started working with wood when I was 16 yrs old, doing odd jobs for a nasty old German Master Cabinet Maker. I was with him for 6 years before he and the guild would certify me because of my young age. I was also going to high school at the time and wouldn't or couldn't leave the lathe alone. In all of my travels and deployments, I was never with a lathe unless I was in a zone of combat, of which I had plenty. My most exciting dedployment was to Australia because of all of the various wood varieties that I had never seen. This translates to turning in some form for 50+ years. I got interested in turning pens and miniature 'stuff' in 1988 which gradually turned to turning pens. Back in the day, there were the slimline pen and pencil, and a rollerball. Because there was no internet, all of the wood you used you supplied for yourself or your friends traded with you. There was no selling of wood except for retail outlets. Many of the kits we purchased back then were from England which meant a very expensive phone call.

Today, I own a small shop and have three lathes. Midi Jet, home made DC lathe that will handle up to 700# for doing root balls, and a mini lathe from Australia. Questions?

Welcome. I went to Sapulpa once to bid on a job. Didn't get it but it was a fun trip over there with friends for the day. Ate at Fish Daddy's in Tulsa for dinner. Great place for fish and cheap Margarita's.

Do one thing at a time, do it well, then move on.

No such thing as a used up Marine, you just get "broken-in".

Would love to see a picture of your "Root Ball Mangler"!

Hey Okiebug!
I had good Army Buddie from Supulpa while stationed in Augsburg, Germany back in 1963. Clifford Freeman, Great to hear that city name since so many years ago. I started turning pens back in 2007 and still love every minute of it. Happy turning!

Sincerely,

Raymond(Bean) James
