New guy from Arizona, here.

Hi all.

I got tired of the political forums and thought maybe this would be a good place to kick back and get some pointers.

I've been doing little things for many years, and when I retired two years ago, I thought I'd make picture frames for my hobby photos. I had a radial arm saw, some benchtop tools, and a bunch of miscellaneous, so I thought I was in good shape. But...

Mrs said "Can you make a table for the living room?"

I am now building furniture. I added a floor drill press, a dedicated mortiser, a belt sander, a biscuit joiner and a surface planer to my collection. I already had a jointer, but I can't get a straight edge with it. I just took the plunge and bought a Powermatic PM2000 3 hp. I've never had a table saw, but it was getting too tough to get better without it. I have now committed my garage, and the cars sit outside.

Here's hoping to learn from all the experience here, and maybe next year I'll be at the local summer festival selling coffee tables...

Welcome to the forum. You find any threads on politics here. The modirators is quick on their feet to delete any that get started. We do wood working here and some times tell a few jokes. It's like going to grandmas house, always welcomed and feels like home.

Good. I've had enough politics for a while.

I'm glad you like pictures, I'll likely be putting some up. I have to learn my way around here first.

Welcome, I think you'll find that you like this one. I've lurked around other forums and didn't like them as much as this one.

You say Arizona? I just moved to Kansas a couple month ago from Prescott, Az. Let me tell ya, I really miss Az. I lived there 25 years.

Thanks, all.

Blackcruzer, if you're interested, on my Flickr page I have a set from a Photowalk held in Prescott last summer. They had them in Phoenix and Tucson, too, but Prescott was cooler and closer to me.

Try this link: http://flickr.com/photos/lightcraft/...7606931817434/

Elsewhere on Flicker there is an entire group for the Prescott event.

Mort Tenon, Thanks for those photo. I enjoyed looking at those, I knew exactly where alot of those were taken. I use to live within a few block where those were taken. I use to take my dog down to Courthouse everyday, use to hangout at the Birdcage Saloon til I quick drinking. Where about are you in Az? You go to Prescott much?

We go occasionally. It was one of the places we almost settled down. Payson was another.

We ended up in Show Low.

welcome mort

mort tenon.....welcome, (this response is pretty much a paste from my welcome tonight to bill-g "new guy from NH"......but the meaning is the same for you too...

i am relatively new here too....welcome. i think you'll find there to be alot of nice peers here. people of all levels of talent that are generous and willing to answer any questions, make suggestions and just share general interest and experience with anyone seeking same. we love pictures and offer encouragement to everyone! don't be shy to pose questions...offer answers etc. i'll say it again...we luv pictures..we're like your long lost relatives...send pics of the little projects! ( i am guilty of needing to run around the houses taking pictures of projects i worked on the years previous to joining this forum and adding to my album)

in PA this am it was -11....suppose thats a bit cool for u!

welcome again

Welcome Mort, I have a brother in law that just moved from Flagstaff down to Phoenix. We visited last year and I can't wait to return.

Make yourself at home here. Lots of good folks and lots of good knowledge.

Thanks, everyone.

We had been coming to AZ for many years in the winter months and finally decided that this is where we would retire. But we never considered the Phoenix area, it's just too hot for former Minnesotans. We needed the four seasons, but we didn't need the weeks of sub-zero temps, so we're here at 6500 feet where we get a little snow, a little cold, but mostly sunshine. Flagstaff is too big, but we go there to shop for items you can't get here, and I buy my wood there at Spellman Hardwoods.

I told my bil that Phoeniz was too hot (they call it a dry heat right? but 114 is 114) but I am looking forward to making a trip out there for a Cubs spring training sometime. He has a growing family and housing was just too high in Flagstaff. He was able to get a good deal on a home in Phoenix so that is where they are headin.
