Red face Need help removing finish

I'm trying to remove the finish from a small plant stand. It was made by Bombay Furniture. Nothing is working. I want to paint the base, but stain the top to match our dining table, so that they'll compliment each other. I'm suspecting its a baked on finish that might only be removed by sanding?

It's possible the old finish is a conversion varnish. I've encountered some before that a company that makes paint and varnish remover couldn't come up with anything that would even take the shine off of. All you can do is try different removers and see if you can find one that will cut the finish. Not every remover will work on every finish.
