Hi,

I'm quite new to woodworking and to this site as well.

I live in the DFW area.

I recently went to Brazos in Grand prairie to buy some lumber for a project. I decided on poplar and red oak.

When purchasing, I asked to see and select the wood. They showed me the wood for both. I went through the first two layers of the board, 5-6 pieces, and picked the best - straightest, least knotty, not chipped or hewn ones. It seemed that all the ones on the top (I wasn't about to shift through about 40 different boards on the lift/car he pulled it all over on) had something not going so well for them. They wern't in bad shape, but not 'problem free' boards. Only a few had pleasing, furniture grade grain, the others were just ok. I picked the best and went on my way.

I was at home depot recently, and saw and realized that they had the same dimensions of the same wood - much better selection - for the same price. Much better looking boards with much better grain, without much flaws or damage at all, for the exact same price pretty much..

This kind of put me back a little, since grand prairie was a 30 minute drive and home depot is a 3 minute drive for me. Why am I finding poorer quality lumber at a lumber store - and one of the few in the DFW area at that - and better stuff at home depot?

Where in the DFW area can I buy reasonably priced hardwood lumber? The drawback with home depot is that they only seem to carry one or two kinds of hardwood.

Cheers
