Hey Hey from Chitown

Hey everyone I'm Ken from Chicago. I am an artist that has always loved building things. I started taking woodworking more seriously in the last two years when I was lucky enough to move into my first house and have a garage to work in.

I started about four years ago by making frames for some of my paintings using a miter box with a hand saw (getting aggravated ) not really knowing much. Since then I have read, watched, payed attention and listened, in addition to still getting aggravated from time to time. I have loaded the garage with tools both power and hand and begun building larger more detailed pieces.

My goal is to continue to learn from everyone here and hopefully be able to share some of my own knowledge in the future. There is great information on this forum as well as beautiful work and I appreciate being able to be part of this!!

-Ken

Welcome to the forum, from a suburbanite of Chicago. I live west of Chicago in Saint Charles. I think you will really enjoy this forum.... I have yet to find anything that they can't help you with.

Hey Fabian how's it going? I live south of the city and am always looking for good stores wherever they may be. I go to the Rockler store in Schaumburg once a month or so. You got any good wood or woodworking stores you go to in the area?

Former Chicagoan here

South side, west side 4 suburbs, near North side,...9 grammar schools by the fourth grade. Lane Tech High School class of '60.
University of Illinois grad X 2. and...like you loved to build things and make things out of wood. Dad taught me how from an early age...60 years ago.
Welcome to our wild bunch here. WE may not have any useful advice, but we will all have some opinions for Ya. bill

The answer to your question will only be as detailed and specific as the question is detailed and specific. Good questions also include a sketch or a photo that illustrates your issue. (:< D)

Things are quite busy with me, having 3 kids, their extra curricular activities.... you know....

As far as stores go, there is a Woodcraft that may be closer to you in Woodridge/downers grove.... http://www.woodcraft.com/stores/store.aspx?id=519

I go there on occasion, mostly when I am in the neighborhood, and they have something on sale that I am interested in.

Their is always harbor freight for your disposables (brushes, etc.) and there are 3 locations, Arlington heights, lombard, aurora.

As far as wood goes, I got "a guy" that I deal with at a specialty construction company, and he will even run some stuff through thier machines if need be. They don't sell to the general public, though. sorry about that.

Give Owl Lumber a try for a pretty nice selection of wood. They have a store in Lombard, DesPlaines and Oak Lawn. http://www.owlhardwood.com/

Wauconda Ill has 2 stores/businesses I deal with.
Wood Werks , which is high end tools, and around the corner is a guy who opened a cutting mill and sells log cuts as well as barn wood. The company name escapes me, but he is off Rt-12 just east on Bonner road about 1000 ft. North side of the road.

Oh and welcome . I'm also new.
God Bless(es)

I just found that Wauconda Illinois address and website for the wood store.
G H Wood Working and Sawmill
www.GHwoodworking.com
441 West Bonner Rd.

I was by there again today and the owner is well versed in wood types, drying processes and "things-o-wood"
