Hello from the San Francisco Bay Area

Hi all,

I'm from the East Bay (SFBA) in Northern Cal. I have a small business called Urban Tree Recycling through which my partner, Jim, and I collect urban trees that have come down, or been cut down, due to natural causes, or for the purposes of landscaping or whatever.

We quarter saw most or our logs to 8/4 slabs to get the best possible grain, stability and value out of our raw materials. We started our business about 2 years ago and are just now getting our first couple of logs dried down to 6 or 7% moisture content.

Finally, we're about ready to finish-mill and use, or sell, our products. Both Jim and I are wood workers. We were sick of the high prices and poor quality of the lumber that was available to us, so we decided to spend a small fortune to get a Timberking 1220 and the rest of the required equipment to log and mill our own lumber.

Hopefully someday, we'll break even if not make a profit, but I don't think this day will come any time soon. I'm still relatively new to woodworking; still learning lots, collecting the tools, and building my shop, but so far I love it.

Welcome from Texas Chris.
Good luck on your new venture. There is nothing like a trip to a local sawmill to pick out your own material.

Did you say tool sale?

I hope you are still with us, I see you joined and have not logged back in for awhile...We would (I would) love to hear more urban salvage lumber stories/see more pictures...you and I do the same thing, I am a treecycler also.
