Hello from Memphis

Hi everyone, I'm Stormie. I must say that while I am not new to comps or the intarwebz, I am new to forums. I don't quite know how all this works, but I am hoping to find some peeps who know what they're talking about & can help me in my endeavor of building my own furniture. I took two years of wood shop in high school (too long ago to remember what I learned), so please be patient with me. I've always been interested in woodworking but never done anything about it. Now I'm a housewife & have lots of time on my hands. I would prefer to be productive rather than be bored all the time. Looking forward to getting to know y'all & learning what will hopefully be a rewarding trade.
Storm

Thank for the 'welcomes' guys. No it wasn't a typo, technically I live in Mississippi, in the town directly south of Memphis. The locals usually just say the greater Memphis area or just claim Memphis rather than giving a no-name town. :)
I love the wooden welcome sign, Cabinetman!

South Memphis?

Hey Storm,

Are you still there in "South" Memphis? if so, get back to me. I'm in Germantown, and new to this forum.

Welcome Storm... you have just joined the best woodworking forum on the net. I belong to a few and prefer this one. Your attitude about woodworking as an additive to your "housewife" style of living is marvelous. My wife was pretty much a stay at home mom while our 4 sons were growing, but when they finished growing here at home, she went and got her Masters degree and got a good job with benefits. She encouraged me to retire on my Teamsters pension because she can offer a good income and benefits.
I now do all the housework and 90% of the cooking. I enjoy the cooking but woodworking is my passion. Since retirement 3 years ago, my woodworking skills have grown from hobbyist to craftsman. Woodworking books and magazines have helped tremendously, but these forums are indispensable. Welcome to the best site on the net!

Its' never hot or cold in New Hampshire... its' always seasonal.

Hi Howard, yes I am still in "south" Memphis. What's up, fellow Memphian?

Life isn't about waiting for the storm to pass, it's about learning to play in the rain.

Hi BernieL, thanks for the welcome! Sounds like you've got yourself an awesome situation right there! It's good to hear you're staying active AND that your wife went out & got what she wanted! Too many people are lazy these days & don't want to do anything, so KUDOS to you and your wife!! I'd love to be able to get to the craftsman (or should I say craftswoman) stage. Not sure I have the mental discipline for all that, lol. I'm more of a Jack-of-all-trades-master-of-none kind of gal. I am easily distracted. Right now my woodworking has handed the wheel to my photography business. Before that it was massage therapy (no, not the sexy kind). ;-) Woodworking has been an interest that has stuck with me ever since I took two years of building trades class in high school though. It was cool, intimidating, scary & fun. Pinterest is FOREVER giving me ideas of things to build & craft. Well now that you know my life story, lol, it's lovely to meet you. I wish you much success in your crafting! Do you have pics of any of your craftwork?

Life isn't about waiting for the storm to pass, it's about learning to play in the rain.

Storm,

Retreading this this afternoon, made me think that you might want to check out "Illustrated Cabinetmaking, How to Design and Construct Furniture That Works", by Bill Hylton. It's a really excellent guide to interior construction that you might really enjoy.

Happy woodworking,

Scootch from NoVa
