Hello From Illinois

Hello to everyone. My name is Jim Hull and I live in Mattoon, Illinois. That is East Central Illinois. I started woodworking about 18 years ago when I decided to build a crib for my first daughter. My wife's family had a wood shop that was seldom used and I thought it would be fun. That crib served us well through two daughters and will be pressed back into service someday for grandkids.

I recently have built my own small shop in 1 bay of our 3 car garage. I have been assembling tools over the last few years and have finally got most of the big machines that I want. However, there is always something new that catches my eye.

I like to build things that interest me and that someone needs. It could be as simple as a cane for the 83 year old neighbor or a table for my mother. I also enjoy refinishing old furniture that my wife finds. Currently I am making a side table for my wife from walnut and quilted maple. I also have a request from my youngest daughter for a jewelry box that will be fulfilled soon.

A buddy of mine and I are also easing into milling lumber for our own use. We do not yet have a mill, but we have been cleaning up some storm damage and pulling interesting items out of brush piles and having them milled.

I appreciate all of the experience and talent represented on this board. I have lurked around for quite a while and have found a lot of useful advice. I look forward to learning more from all of you.

Welcome to the forum Jim, there is a lot of knowledge here and many talented woodworkers always willing to help/advise. We've met so you know I am just a hack woodworker with a little pile of wood to practice on until I get better at it.

If you do ever get a mill the milling section here is also a good place to ask/discuss that too. Several members run mills, some just starting-some old pros and everything in between.

Welcome from central Oregon!

My wife shot down my initial idea of building a crib for our daughter. Considering the speed that I work, it wouldn't have been ready until probably our first grandchild.
