welcome to the forum, David.
this is an open forum with all levels of skills and talents.
please feel free to join in the conversations that you find interesting
and ask questions to expand your skill levels and share what you know.
if you would like to know more about something, you can start a new thread.
we like to see photos of projects to share with others.
when addressing specific issues or concerns, sketches, drawings and photos
will get you the most accurate responses. (and we can all be on the same page).
looking forward to seeing some of your projects.

we would much rather see posts of: "How do I do this"
~ vs ~ "How can I FIX this" . . . .

hope you enjoy your stay.

.

there is no educational alternative to having a front row seat in the School of Hard Knocks.

Welcome to the forum, David! We do like photos so show us your shop, tools, projects, etc. whenever you're ready. What sort of woodworking are you planning or doing?

It took some doing, but I finally got logged back in.

I'm down in far western Kentucky, near Paducah. I went to grad school at WKU, but that was in the late 70s. Along with teaching, I have a farm and have been re-doing my shop from a place to work on equipment to a woodworking shop, in preparation for when I retire and can just build things for fun. My house has lots of furniture and such that my great grandfather, grandfather and father made. My father passed when I was young, so I didn't learn much about woodworking, but did inherit a lot of hand tools, which I'm now trying to learn how to use. I've mostly used power tools to build things, from book cases, to my barn and shop. Mostly, I've been building things to organize my shop, like tool stands, storage cases, and clamp racks.

My next project is going to be a way to store my 20+ handplanes, which I'm looking forward to restoring and putting into use.

I'm not sure how to post any photos here, as the "rules" say not to post attachments, yet there is a "drag files here to attach" option.

Yup. Drag the photos to "drag files here to attach." They are not referring to photos or files related to woodworking. I have posted photos and PDF spreadsheets (with conversion charts), no problem.

The restriction applies to posting an application that could contain malware, and files like that.

Photos are especially helpful when you have a question to ask. I would like to see photos of your projects, your shop, etc. The photos of other people's projects give me new ideas and inspiration.

Welcome aboard! I hope you enjoy it here.

I don't have much that would provide inspiration! My shop is a mess, as I am transforming it a bit at a time. I'll try to post some pics, just to learn how.

This my shop, which is just across the driveway from my house.

The spinning wheel and the mallet in these photos were made by my great grandfather. I still have a bunch of his tools. The little Cowry routing plane and a Grizzly No. 7 in the photo are new, all the others are very old. I have been working on restoring those, and learning to use them properly.

Lately I've been mostly building stands and tool holders to get better organized. All the stands have either shelves or drawers. I've been putting sliding organizers in most of the drawers so as not to waste space. Almost everything in my shop, including the lumber rack and my workbench, are on wheels. I have to move things around a lot, depending on what I'm working on.

I'm not sure why these ended up sideways...

I'm still learning Sketchup, and not doing very well with it. This is my attempt to layout what I want to build next. The two angled shelves will hold hand planes. The drawers beneath them will be for chisels, small saws, and piles of hand plane parts.

I'm still trying to decide whether to build the entire case as one piece, or make the top and bottom separate. Right now, I've got it figured to be 48 inches wide, 30 inches deep, and 60 inches tall. Like everything else, it will be on wheels.

Nice work, David! Here are some photo posting tips if you’re taking photos with your phone or iPad – the best way for proper orientation is to shoot landscape (widescreen). Rotate your phone or iPad CCW for proper orientation. If you want your photos to be portrait then open the photo in a viewer on your computer, rotate it to the orientation you want, then save it in that orientation. It will be correct when you upload it to the servers here. If you’re shooting video please shoot widescreen like our monitors, not portrait.

The best way to post photos in line with your text is to use Go Advanced below the Quick Reply window. If you’re starting a new thread then you’re automatically in the Advanced editor. Click on the Paper Clip on the ribbon bar and that will bring up a dialogue box where you can browse to your photos. Upload them and then put your cursor where you want a photo, hit the dropdown beside the Paper Clip, and choose the photo you want inserted. If you have several photos and just want them at the end of your text then put your cursor at the end and hit the Insert All on the dropdown list of photos.

Always post a photo rather than a link; most folks won't click on a link.
