Eh! From Manitoba Canada

Hey Guys,

Been doing a bit of reading on this site before I registered and there is a TON of knowledgeable people on here I would love to pick the brains of, so I've decided to register to join on the discussion.

Anyways about me - I'm 25 from Manitoba and am pretty much BRAND NEW to woodworking (and I mean basic basic). Thankfully I've had the month of October off and i've done a lot of reading on the internet to learn. Started off buying a few handy tools and measuring devices as well as just a drill/driver set and a circ saw and am enrolled in my first woodworking course here in January.

Currently in the middle of my first project which I have loads of questions on. I'm doing a simple 56.5" H x 20" W book case for my closet made out of pine plywood. I literally spent 2-3 hours yesterday just practicing measuring, measuring, then measuring again, cutting and sanding outside, so I've only gotten 3 cuts done.

Great site you guys have going here, looking forward to learning and being able to input myself soon!

Cheers,

Yup you can learn quite a bit here, and remember when you are measuring, remember to allow for the kerf of the blade

Bookcase in a closet? Or is it a shoe rack and shelving?

If you don't have time to do it right the first time, when will you have time to do it over?

Thanks. I'm even still brushing up on my definitions as well. I've been using a large level as a straight edge. Looks like from blade to the bottom plate of the edge of the saw is about 1 1/4" which I've been measuring off my cut line for the straight edge. Assuming that's a good way to do it?

Sorry, should have clarified. It's basically a shelving unit. I have some questions so I'll be posting some sketchup drawings later.

Thanks for the warm welcomes!

woodworking is basically learning from your mistakes. every project gets better, and usually more complex. learning how to use your tools, and safely, will put you on the road to being a craftsman. welcome to the world of wood!

I grew up in western Manitoba and lived for 5yrs or so in Winnipeg. I would like to say I have been everywhere in MB but probably not.
