box elder cookie

rookie and computer illiterate.
I live in mid michigan and just got into rustic furniture making.
I acquired about a 4 foot diameter box elder stump. I am going to try to make a couple of tables out of it. Have already cut several 2-3 inch cookies from it. tree was dead and partially dry. How do I complete the drying with out too much cracking? When it is finished I will probably use an epoxy finish on it. Any suggestions?

Hello Matt
Welcome to the forum.
Whole 'Cookies' ,( full diameter slabs ), are very tough to keep from cracking. I've tried it with several other tree varieties, (not box elder), & had pretty poor luck. My 1st thought would be to dry them as SLOW as possible. Your saving grace may be the fact that the tree was dead already & may have shrunk some before you cut it. I know it can be done, 'cause I've seen finished tables etc. Any one else have any suggestions?
Ron

p.s. You might try re-posting this in the Forestery & Milling and/or General Woodworking sections, I think you'll get more views from those that will have better experience in these matters.
