Learning Sketchup

I've taken a class in AutoCAD and I'm in the middle of taking a class in Revit. While they're ideal for some of the things I'll do, I'm also thinking about learning Sketchup.

Can I teach myself Sketchup by trial and error and constantly pestering you guys, or should I look for a class? Recommendations for a book would also be greatly appreciated.

Thanks for any advice.

SketchUp is pretty easy to learn, a class certainly couldn't hurt but I doubt it would help overly much. If you know AutoCAD I can't imagine you'd have any trouble at all with SketchUp, the latter is much more user friendly

+1 What Matt said. I don't have any CAD experience but I learned how to use SU. At least for the things I build. Wish I had known about it a few years earlier. :frown2:

Sketch Up Question

I don't want to hijack this conversation, but what version of Sketch up is everyone using? I downloaded what I thought was the correct version but it is a 30 trial of Pro. Just tried Sketch Up Make but it gave me the same message that I was beyond my free trial period. A link would be GREAT.

Sketchup should automatically revert to the free version after the pro trail period ends. And I am using sketchup 2016.

Download Sketchup Make. It the free download, not the trial pro version, it does all the same but won't work with CAD. It is an amazing piece of software when you figure it out, I've designed timber frame houses with it and made presentations using the different styles that make it look like I'm a professional artist. Worth taking time to learn and it is easy to do the basics.

Jay Bates has You Tube videos of projects he builds using Sketchup. One thing he does is tell the shortcut keystrokes used for the various tools he uses. He is fast so you might have to pause and reflect! :-)
