Working with bark on branches

I am looking for advice on working with branches that still have the bark on. My daughter collects animal mugs and I thought it would be nice to make a mug holder that looked like a tree.

Any suggestions on how to preserve the wood or clean the bark?

Your in luck. The best way to keep the bark on is cut the branches in winter when the tree is dormant. Then you might put a flat polyurethane on it so it doesn't change the appearance very much. They can be cleaned with soap and water however let the water dry for several days before doing anything with it.
